51 Pegasi B

51 Pegasi b, also knowned as Dimidium is a hot jupiter like planet approximately 50 light years from the constellatio of Pegasus. The planet was discovered in 1995 by Michel Mayor and Didier Quezol.

The planet was discovered using the radial velocity method with the Elodie Spectograph on the De Haute Observatoire. The planet was discovered using a sensitive spectroscope that could detect the slight and regular velocity changes in the star's spectral lines of around 70 metres per second. These changes are caused by the planet's gravitational effects from just 7 million kilometres' distance from the star. This was the first discovery of an exoplanet that orbits a star like star.

The Location Of 51 Pegasi

The planet rotates its star in only 4 days. Moving with a speed of 136m/s but it is much closer to its star than Mercury is to the sun. The planet was a mass about half that of Jupiter. The formation of the planet was consider an anomaly due to its enormous size and the distance from its parent star. Altho later they revisited their theories as more hot Jupiters have been discovered close to their parent star.

The planet is tidally locked to its star, that means that it always presents the same face to it. Wutg a temprature would be 1265k (1000°C).
